Red Hood with Guns!

Time for something a little different. Well, sorta...
It's little red riding hood once again. Don't ask my why she's hurdling towards the ground holding two personalized hand-cannons. She just does these things, ok?
I mean, what do you think she'd grow into? What, after having dealt with the big bad wolf when she was just a little, uh.. little-er girl, it was only natural she'd seek a life of thrills. And everybody knows that the wolf clan don't like it when you go after one of their own.

And as a quick follow up, here's something I did for the flyer to my going away party back in Denmark. Had a good time drawing this one.

Unloading some Fantasy

Well, the time has come to unload this collection of paintings. They're you're standard assortment of fantasy.
Hopefully these will be enough to start sufficiently overhauling my portfolio.

To start we'll delve into the realm of Warhammer with a Champion of Khorne. I started this painting about two years ago I believe. Right when I started working for LEGO. I remember painting over entire chunks of detailed armor to unify the whole thing more. I learned a lesson I had forgotten about solidifying your design and sketch before jumping in heads over heels... Go figure. Anyway this paintings been sitting around my hard drive for forever because I felt some parts weren't completely done. But honestly, I really couldn't be bothered to finish it. So I'm just going to go ahead and post it up. Huzzah!

I think next time I'll paint a knight who is perhaps actually in battle and has sustained real battle damage. I mean, for a Chosen of Khorne, he sure doesn't seem like he's lived through hundreds of battles. Ok, you can argue that he takes a very diligent interest in the maintenance of his armor, or perhaps its so magical it constantly restores itself to pristine condition... then again you'd think that'd be awfully slaanesh of it.

Then we have an oldie but a goodie. I retouched the painting of my old Cleric from my Dungeons and Dragons game I was running a few years back, and added color to boot! Woots and all that.

But enough of all these old paintings, lets move into something a little newer. It's a rogue from my current Dungeons and Dragons campaign. We have since moved from 3.5 edition to 4th edition and it's been really enjoyable so far.
Anyway, this is supposed to be a halfling although I must confess it looks more like a gnome. Which I guess is fine since I'm not a huge fan of the picture in the players handbook of them anyhow. Ahem, let's move on.

And let's not forget to insert some dragon into our Dungeons and Dragons conversation. While I haven't managed to squeeze one into a session yet since the party is still at a low level (I'll find a way...GM's get to use some tricks after all.) but I couldn't resist painting one up just for kicks.
Anyway, I was playing a lot of Magic at the time and well, what with the art direction of the mirrodin block at the time, decided to try and emulate a sort of metallic element into the dragon. This is the end result, I'm quite pleased with it.

Lastly, I noticed I hadn't painted something with tentacles in it for quite some time. This was originally supposed to have been nothing more than a wall mount of some sort but throughout the painting process I decided to turn it into some sort of Lovecraftian Sigil or Seal.

Frogs and Teeth

Just some quick sketches from this weekend. First is a frog study that got a bit away from me. The orange one is the study, the purple one thinks it's a tiger apparently.

The Elusive Rock

I have managed to capture various glimpses of the elusive creature dubbed "rocks" in various habitats. I've compiled all my findings gathered throughout what seemed like months of careful observation and study below:

As can be seen from the following images rocks can blend in with a wide range of different environments. They've been known to roam alone or in huge packs ranging across entire meadows. They are generally peaceful and will leave travelers alone unless cornered or to protect it's young.

To feed, a rock maintains a very still position until small prey scuttles too close, then the rock lurches into the air and crushes the unlucky critter. It will then proceed to absorb any nutrients via a complicated dermal layer.

To this day, no one has been fortunate enough to capture a rock "in action", so to speak, even though the scientific community has promised quite a hefty reward.

Perched Raven

Alright, here's a quick one of a raven perched on the remains of...er. Well, perhaps they're the remains of a banner holder for a festive parade. What else could that vibrant fabric be used for?

What bother's me is how impeccably shiny the helmet is. You'd think that in the state he's in, the helmet would perhaps have a scratch on it... or maybe a dent. Ah well, the world's full of mysteries.

Finally another update!
I know, I know, it's been a while since I've posted anything new and I'm long overdue so I decided to post up some random sketches I've done recently.

But first, this!:

That's right ladies and gentlemen, you see correct. It's the long awaited concept art for HEROICA!...well just a teaser, something to wet the appetite so to speak. I'm working on making a proper post with a lot of the work I did for HEROICA in addition to the NINJAGO comic I worked on as well and it will all be up as soon as it's finished.

Alright, now back to the regular program.
Nothing too fancy this time, just a skull study that ended up straying a bit. It was a lighting exercise for something else I'm working on but I like how it turned out... then I proceeded to save it as a low res over the original. Ah well, we can't win all the time.

And some really quick studies of ravens. I want to paint up some bird like characters like a Kenku or something. We'll see where that ends up going. In the meantime sketches:

Lastly is something I did a while ago. It was a quick texture exercise and originally wanted to color it, but now I really can't be bothered anymore.

This is a quick mock up for a crashed ship on an alien planet. It's a sketch of the background we might use for a friend's quick video test. We'll see how that turns out if it develops into anything. In the meantime, enjoy the image.

Just a quick speed painting of a city built on some giant silo or something. Was mostly just doodling on this one. I like the way the clouds turned out on this one considering how little time I spent on them.

And yet another speed painting of a city. This time in a desert with a bridge, yay! These were fun to do but I think I might start doing specific period architecture to also add some academic value to doing these as I'd have to look up refference. Either way, just painting obligatory skyscrapers doesn't really push the boundary eh?

Oh hey look. Speaking of period based architecture. Here's some Egyptian-esque stuff. This painting is actually a year old already. I quit working on it because I wanted to add a much more drastic dash of fantasy with large tapestries or glowing lanterns and it just didn't want to work. That and after all this work I just wanted it to be a night scene... But I guess none of that will happen. So I'm just uploading it and calling it finished.

Here's a really quick study I did as a demo for a friend of mine. As I was painting this I realized that the image I had stolen from the internets (I know, woe unto me) was actually completely duo-tone. Only blues and yellows. So that helped show color theory but kind of compromised the reason I was doing the study. And as an extra bonus, I forgot where I got the photo of so I can't credit the original... yay I'm awesome...sorry.

Oh man, I also just noticed that all the focal points in these pictures are about a third on the right hand side... Gotta switch that up more.

Tron Inspired

I watched Tron Legacy again recently and wanted to paint some of those fancy shiny helmets all the bad guys wear in the grid. I really liked how Rinzler's helmet felt insectiod and tried to retain that in my design as well. I also decided to use a skull as another design influence so I threw in some grill things that would flash with obligatory light when the wearer speaks. Then accentuated the cheeks and made the lights on his torso repeat the skull motif.

Then I found another painting I had done a few months ago that was somewhat reminiscent of the Portal color scheme. It's a guard droid for upscale corporations in some distant future...where everything is clean and shiny I guess.
Anyway, the droids have a direct feed into their scopes while lacking any visual input on their actual heads. I'd image this would lead to some interesting interactions where they shoot around corners or over cover. In addition this could also be exploited as a weakness where they have certain blind spots based on the positioning of their guns.
Decided I'd paint a second version with a more Tron-like color scheme and create a showdown.

So after the success of my last warm-up, I decided that I'd do another one.
Can you guess who it is?

Well, because I chose a photo of someone specific, I had likeness to deal with. It proved to be quite the struggle especially since the photo I was referencing was so minimal in detail... I had to cheat a little bit halfway through, just a teensy bit, but I'm happy with the piece overall.

So I painted this for a Friend of mine. It's him as a Transformer. With the mighty ability to transform into his car, a Berlingo.

Tried to stick to the old school transformer form language and rendering style. I think it turned out pretty good.

Caterpillar Study

Found some awesome pictures of insect close-ups online and just had to do a study of this caterpilar.
I just loved the way it's face looked, with the tiny little eyes beneath the hairs.
Was fun to work with focal length and using the soft brush a bit more for a change.
Total time was a little less than 3hrs.

This was a quick speed painting I did after having a strong urge to paint a Dune-esque worm ripoff. After the initial speedie was done I went ahead and made a semi-finish version of it in another session. Total time: 5-6 hours.

This is a picture of my character in a Dungeons and Dragons campaign I'm running. After I checked out the new concept art for Diablo II, I couldn't help but to paint this sucker up.
He's an evil cleric with the pestilence and hunger domains summoning an insect swarm.
